Comprehension and Inference

Barriers to Comprehension

Barriers to comprehension are often hidden from view. Poor 'comprehenders' often do not know they are. They are less likely to be motivated to read, readless challenging books and have fewer opportunities to develop vocabulary and general knowledge. They are often passive, read slowly and do not question reading which does not make sense.

Professional development available: Target Literacy supports teachers and teaching assistants in understanding these barriers, observing and identifying individual barriers to comprehension and ways to address issues.

Inference Training

Many children who are able to decode text adequately find it more difficult to comprehend and infer meaning. Target Literacy offers 'Inference Training Intervention' as a method of improving reading comprehension at KS2 & KS3.

Inference Training, based on the work of Yuill & Oakhill (2007), and developed further by Tony Whatmuff in Leicester City, is a method of improving reading comprehension at KS2 & KS3. It was initially developed for pupils with age appropriate decoding skills but poor reading comprehension but is also suitable for pupils with improving decoding skills. Many of the strategies can be used by teachers within guided reading.
