Many children who are able to decode text adequately find it more difficult to comprehend and infer meaning. Target Literacy offers 'Inference Training Intervention' as a method of improving reading comprehension at KS2 & KS3.

Inference Training, based on the work of Yuill & Oakhill (2007), and developed further by Tony Whatmuff in Leicester City, is an evidence-based method of improving reading comprehension at KS2 & KS3. It was initially developed for pupils with age appropriate decoding skills but poor reading comprehension but is also suitable for pupils with improving decoding skills. Many of the strategies can be used by teachers within guided reading.
