Observing Reading and Writing

This training is for classroom teachers or TAs who want to be careful observers of young children learning to read and write. It will help them to monitor the progress of children through the school’s early literacy curriculum programme. It is also for teachers or TAs who work individually with young children having temporary difficulties with literacy learning. Delegates will be trained to use An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement, which offers assessment tasks designed for systematic observation of young children as they begin to acquire literacy skills. Delegates will be shown how to summarise these assessments and plan precision teaching to address issues the assessments reveal.

Many of these approaches are used in the highly successful Reading Recovery intervention.
